Dell Latitude 13 3300 Education Laptop Overview

The design
Dell Latitude 13 for Education is a wild animal, but not a sexy breed. Built to withstand droplets in busy aisles, the lid, deck, bezel and underside of the laptop are covered with rugged gray plastic that is easy to hold and stain-resistant. The edges consist of black rubber, which helps absorb shocks.

On the lid is a shiny Dell logo with a network status indicator light on it, which adds a nice touch and allows the teacher to see at a glance whether students are working or just browsing the Web.

The bottom of the notebook that houses a six-cell lithium-ion battery protrudes about an inch, adding a large amount to the already decent notebook. The non-touch configuration of Latitude 13 which only carries a four-cell battery will not have this bulge and is also 0.2 pounds lighter.

Open Latitude 13 Education, and you will find an island-style black keyboard. To the right of the keyboard, there is a power button and a row of indicator lights along the edge to indicate power, Wi-Fi, and battery status. Centered below the G and H keys are the trackpad, with two buttons below it.

You can open the lid on Latitude 13 180 degrees so that the screen is level, which according to Dell makes it easy to share screens easily for group discussions around the table.

Additional protection installed on Latitude makes it bigger than your typical 13-inch notebook. At 13 x 9.6 x 0.96-1.41 inches and 4.4 pounds, Latitude 13 is higher than Lenovo Yoga 2 13 (13 x 8.71 x 0.68 inches; 3.6 pounds)

and wider from the Toshiba Satellite E45t (13.4 x 9.2 x 0.8 inches; 4.4 pounds). It's smaller and lighter than the ASUS VivoBook V451L (13.7 x 9.5 x 1 inch; 4.8 pounds), but the VivoBook and Satellite both have larger 14-inch screens.

Durability and Safety
Although this is not a completely crude system, Latitude 13 Education can take more abuse than your ordinary notebook. Built to meet military standards (MIL-STD 810G) for durability, the Latitude 13 is equipped with rubber trim around the LCD and its base and can withstand a drop of as high as 30 inches.

You can't dip it in water, but the notebook's keyboard and touchpad are fully closed preventing liquid from spilling into the device's circuit. The cable lock on the Latitude side allows students to secure their computers to permanent objects to prevent theft.

Latitude 13 also features a TPM for secure credential storage and Dell Data Protection Encryption, which defends your data on external devices and in the cloud. Windows 7 Latitudes can also run Dell's Protected Workspace, which finds and blocks malicious behavior, such as viruses, Trojans and zero-day attacks.

Display
We enjoyed watching the 1080p footage for "X-Men: Days of Future Past" on the vibrant and responsive Latitude 13 13.3 inches, 1366 x 768 touch screen.

Mystique's scaly blue skin and bright red hair looked vibrant, while details like deep lines on Professor Xavier's (older) forehead were clear. Some text, like numbers and letters in the weather and photos, looks blurry, but the words on Laptopmag.com and NYTimes.com are crisp.

Unfortunately, the viewing angle is narrow, with the image coming out when we tilt the screen to exceed 45 degrees. When we put the laptop fully on the table, we have to stand right on the system to see the video clearly. The glossy Corning Gorilla Glass panel also causes some light.

On our colorimeter, Latitude 13 produces 65.9 percent of the sRGB color gamut. That's less than the average of the thin and light categories (70 percent) and Yoga 2 13 (102 percent), but more than the VivoBook (62 percent).

The Delta-E Latitude score of 2.6 shows that it displays colors that are more accurate than the average thin-and-light laptop (6.56) and Yoga (6.5), but that it's less accurate than the ASUS VivoBook (0.7).

Measuring 171 lux (182 nits) on our light meter, Latitude 13 is dimmer than the average thin-and-light laptop (237 lux) and 239-lux Yoga 2 13, but brighter than the VivoBook (148 lux) and Satellite E45t (149 lux).

Audio
You will enjoy loud music that is mostly accurate through the speakers under Latitude 13. Rihanna's voice in "Right Now" is clear against synths in the background, and music easily fills in small meeting rooms.

We found drums and bass in "Some Children" by Holy Ghost! rather canned, especially when the notebook is placed on our lap.

Printing 88dB on the Mag Laptop audio test, which involves playing tones and measuring it from 23 inches, Latitude 13 is louder than the thinner and lighter-weight notebook (83 dB). Dell also beat Satellite (73 dB), VivoBook (73 dB) and Yoga (77 dB).

Keyboard and Touchpad
We enjoy typing on the Latitude 13 island-style keyboard that is conveniently placed. The keys offer adequate travel and depth and are slightly curved for more comfortable finger placement.

In the Typing Test HQ evaluation, we recorded an average of 84.76 words per minute (98.65 percent accuracy), slightly slower than our desktop average of 95.5 wpm (99.3 percent accuracy).

We expect the function in the top row of the button to be reversed, so we don't need to press the Fn button to trigger commands such as increasing / decreasing volume and brightness.

The 3.4 x 2-inch touchpad under the responsive keyboard, allows us to easily launch the Windows 8 Charms menu by swiping from the right edge of the trackpad. Two-finger scrolling and pinch-to-zoom also work well on web pages and images. We also like the two physical buttons on the bottom of the pad, which make it easy to trigger left and right clicks.

Hot
You might want to keep Latitude 13 from your lap. After playing videos on Hulu for 15 minutes in full screen, the bottom of the laptop reaches 100 degrees Fahrenheit, which has a problem.

It was hotter than our 95-degree comfort threshold. The touchpad registers a temperature of 83 degrees F while the space between the G and H keys reaches 87 degrees F.

Webcams and Ports
The Latitude 13 webcam is adequate for selfies and Skype calls, but just barely. Even in a well-lit environment, we noticed a lot of visual disturbances, and the picture looked faded. The lime green of our headphones and the orange box of Tic Tac look dull and inaccurate. Dell does not offer separate camera applications outside of the stock Windows version.

Students will be able to associate Latitude 13 to anything, thanks to connectivity options forces. Ports for power, Ethernet, HDMI, mini DisplayPort and USB 3.0 with PowerShare sitting on the left bank. On the right side are an SD card reader, a 3.5mm audio jack, a second USB 3.0 port, and a security cable slot.

Performance
Packing a 1.2-GHz dual-core CPU Intel Core i3-4005U with 4GB RAM, Latitude 13 provides good performance every day. We smoothly aired the episode "Modern Family" on Hulu while applications such as cameras and game installers "League of Legends" were running in the background.

Switching between a traditional desktop and the Start screen (Metro UI) only takes a second, and the camera quickly takes pictures in quick succession without hiccuping. It takes a few seconds to start an application such as Weather or Photos.

In synthetic testing, Latitude's performance is not stellar. The PCMark 7 score of 2,313 is less than the thin and light average of 3,897 and lags behind competitors such as VivoBook (2,782), Yoga 2 13 (2,939) and Satellite E45t (4,316).

However, the last three systems all have a more powerful 1.6 GHz Intel Core i5-4200U CPU, with ASUS and Toshiba carrying 6GB RAM, while Lenovo has 4GB.

Latitude also failed to give an impression on Geekbench 3, reaching 3,480 against the category average (5,756), Satellite (4,962), VivoBook (4,989) and Yoga (5,052).

With a 500GB 5,400rpm SATA hard drive, Latitude 13 boots Windows 8.1 Pro in 24 seconds. It's slower than the average thin and light laptop (20 seconds), Satellite E45t (21 seconds) and Yoga (15 seconds), but faster than VivoBook (33 seconds).

Copying 4.97GB of mixed-media files in 2 minutes 29 seconds (34 MBps), Latitude 13 is much slower than the average thin-and-light notebook (93.79 MBps), but faster than VivoBook (23 MBps), Satellite (28 MBps) and Yoga (30.5 MBps).

Latitude 13 lags behind the competition in the OpenOffice Spreadsheet Macro test, pairing 20,000 names and addresses in 8 minutes and 5 seconds. Satellite (5:20), VivoBook (5:18), Yoga (5:14) and the average thin-and-light notebook (6:32) are all faster.

Graphics and Games
With an Intel HD 4400 graphics chip, Latitude 13 offers a solid casual gaming experience for students who want to balance work and play, but will not handle any heavy tasks.

On 3DMark IceStorm Extreme, Latitude scored 21,907 against the average thin-and-light category of 30,387. That is also under Satellites (23,907), Yoga (30,690) and VivoBook (31,215).

By pushing only 29 frames per second on the "World of Warcraft" benchmark on automatic detection at 1366 x 768, Latitude is far below the Intel Mobile HD GPU (36 fps), Yoga Intel Graphics 4600 supported by Yoga (41) fps) and Intel HD Graphics 4400 VivoBook supported by GPU (42 fps). We consider 30 fps as the minimum frame rate that can be played.

Software and Applications
Running Windows 8.1 Pro, Latitude 13 for Education offers students a fun and productivity mix. You can receive notifications from the selected application, swipe left to turn on the camera (when set) and answer Skype calls from the lock screen.

Windows 8.1 only boots to the desktop by default, allowing you to use a familiar environment from the start. Long pressing or right-clicking on the Start button displays a list of options such as Programs and Features, Task Manager and Control Panel.

On the Start screen, along with the colorful Live Tiles grid, the persistent Power button is now in the upper right corner for you to quickly lock or shut down your computer. Swipe in from the right to open the Charms menu for quick access to Search, Share, Device and Settings.

Both desktop and Live applications now have a title bar at the top; these bars display the Minimize and Exit buttons at the top right so you can easily dock or exit the application.

Dell keeps Latitude 13 free from bloatware, only integrating Backup and Recovery tools, Power Manager, and Digital Delivery with notebooks.

You will get Windows 8 rates like Skype, Bing, Internet Explorer 11, OneDrive and Movie Maker. A trial version of Microsoft Office 2013 is included, as is a 12-month subscription to McAfee Security Center.

Battery Life and Warranty
Lasted for 13 hours 10 minutes on the Mag Laptop (Web surfing via Wi-Fi) battery test, the six-cell lithium-ion battery 65 WHr Latitude 13 outperformed the average category of laptops (6:11), VivoBook (6:54), Satellite ( 8:06) and Yoga (5:13).

It should be noted that Latitude 13 is tested at 100 nits, which means 52 percent of its full brightness. We tested VivoBook, Satellite, and Yoga with 40 percent of the maximum brightness of each device using our old battery test.

Dell offers a basic hardware warranty for one year with limited on-site assistance for one year after remote diagnosis.

Pricing and Configuration
Our Dell Latitude 13 Education series unit packs an Intel Core i3 chip with 4GB of RAM and a 500GB SATA hard drive for $ 769 at Dell.com. This is the only one that offers Windows 8.1 Pro and a touch screen. Latitude 13 education is also equipped with a six-cell battery.

Dell offers three other flavors of Latitude 13 that carry Windows 7 Pro without a touch screen. This series carries a lighter four-cell battery. Prices start at $ 539 for versions with Intel Celeron chips, $ 669 for Intel Core i3 processors and $ 769 for Core i5 CPUs.

All three configurations use the same 500GB SATA hard drive and come with Windows 8.1 Pro license and media if you want to upgrade.

While the touch model is only available in black, the non-touch version is available in black, blue or red.

Decision
Latitude 13 Education ($ 769 as reviewed) is a sturdy laptop that is capable of handling everyday functions. Its impressive battery will last throughout the school day and even through after school activities.

Unfortunately, most of these notebooks can cause teens some sadness, and performance can be better for the price.

Although it lacks Dell's durability and durability, the Toshiba Satellite E45t $ 679 offers better Core i5 speeds and graphics. However, overall, the Latitude 13 durability and security features make it suitable for classrooms.
